Communicating with patients in end of life situations and their families presents a unique set of challenges for health professionals for which their training often does not prepare them. The way clinical decisions are discussed has a direct impact on the decision reached. This course encourages communication strategies for health professionals to understand their patients’ situation and wishes and in doing so, facilitates a more collaborative therapeutic journey.

This course has been developed in the context of medical practice in Victoria, Australia. However, its principles are universal and applicable to all health professionals communicating with patients at the end of their lives and their surrogate decision makers. 

This is a small group high intensity interactive course where clinicians can hone their skills in communicating complex medical information in a meaningful and empathetic way with immediate feedback and proctoring from experienced peers, physician facilitators and standardised patients.
